There are clear signs of a roof leak and ones that are less obvious. With all the rain we’ve been having, we’ve heard from many homeowners about a “new leak.” Many of these so-called new leaks have actually been giving signs but the homeowners didn’t know what they were looking for. Here are some of less obvious signs that signal that you need a roof leak repair company.

Musty Smells

If you realize that one room or area of your home has a musty smell that you can’t seem to figure out where it’s coming from, you might have a roof leak. Often a roof will leak and the water is absorbed into the sheetrock in the ceiling and the insulation. As it sits damp it creates a musty spell in the home long before any staining on the ceiling appears.

Water Around Your Bathroom Fan

Some homeowners mistakenly think that the water around their bathroom exhaust fan is condensation from their shower. Although this is a possibility, if there is enough water that it actually drips, chances are good that the flashing or sealant around the exhaust on the roof is leaking. This is one of the most overlooked signs of a roof leak that can do significant damage. If water is pouring in, turn of the electric in that part of the home, call a roof leak repair company and an electrician.

Bubbling and Peeling Paint

Although more common inside your home, bubbling and peeling paint can be a sign of a roof leak. If you notice bubbling paint on a wall or ceiling, have a bucket and towels ready before you touch it. It may have water trapped behind the paint, especially if you used a semi or gloss latex-based paint. Peeling paint isn’t as common but can be a sign of dampness behind the wall which could be a roof, wind or siding leak.

Water Under Your Baseboard

If you have water coming out under your baseboard, you may think that you have an issue with your window or siding and that could be accurate, but it could also be a roof leak. Because water follows the path of least resistance, water can come from your attic, down your walls and out your floorboards.
